Mandela to Miss World Cup Opening Ceremony
A ceremony is scheduled to take place in Johannesburg today, officially opening the World Cup tournament. As the world’s largest sporting event, the ceremony is due to be a lavish and joyous occasion, however it has been touched by devestation following a death last night.
Former President Nelson Mandela’s great granddaughter, 13 year old Zenani Mandela, was on her way home from an eve of tournament concert last night when the car she was in overturned and crashed. No other passengers were killed, but Zenani tragically lost her life. Police in South Africa have released information that the driver, another member of Mandela’s family, was drunk at the time of the accident. They have now been charged with drunk driving and culpable homicide. Due to this sad news, Nelson Mandela will no longer be attending today’s ceremony.
At 91 years of age, Mandela has been in frail health for some time. He learned about the death of his great granddaughter earlier this morning, and did not feel it would be appropriate to attend the celebrations under the circumstances. He will be mourning along with the rest of Zenani’s family. People in South Africa and across the world are sending their sympathies to the Mandela family. Unfortunately, this is not the first tragedy to hit the family; Nelson Mandela has also lost 2 sons before their time. One died of AIDS, and the other was the victim of a car crash and died while Mandela was in captivity.
It has been a great achievement for South Africa to host this prestigious event; there were many doubts that the nation was suitable, due to the lack of an infrastructure and the worryingly high crime rates. Although they managed to complete all of the infrastructures in time, crime is still a problem with reported thefts on the football sites. The World Cup will raise awareness of South Africa and will bring plenty of tourism into the country, and will hopefully be hugely beneficial for them.
