Baby Joy for Wayne and Coleen
Manchester United and England footballer Wayne Rooney has become a proud father yesterday after his wife Coleen gave birth to a baby boy, who they have named ‘Kai’. The family were seen leaving the hospital earlier today, looking happy and glowing with family around them. The birth was 9 days overdue, but Kai finally arrived at 2.20pm weighing a healthy 8lbs. Wayne and Coleen were seen thanking hospital staff as they loaded their car, which was brimming with gifts from well wishers.
His manager Sir Alex Ferguson gave Wayne some time off from training so that he could be present at the birth. He was due to be back on the pitch by tomorrow night for the match against CSKA Moscow, but he has been excused on this occasion.
It seems as though the Rooneys are trying to keep their little one out of the spotlight – they have reportedly turned down large offers from magazines to get exclusive photos of baby Kai. He has been given the middle name ‘Wayne’ – it is tradition amongst the men in the Rooney family to take their father’s name (Wayne Rooney’s father is also called Wayne).
‘Kai’ is an unusual name, but that is not uncommon in the celebrity world. In the past, we have seen Gwenyth Paltrow and Chris Martin name their daughter ‘Apple’, Bob Geldof fathered ‘Peaches’ and ‘Pixie’, and David Bowie went for a rhyming name by calling his daughter ‘Zowie’. The U2 singer Bono took it to another level by calling his son ‘Elijah Bob Patricius Guggi Q. Hewson’, but it doesn’t quite beat Frank Zappa’s three children: Dweezil, Moon Unit and Diva Muffin.
‘Kai’ is in fact a popular name in Finland (where it means ‘probably’), and made it into the top 100 most popular baby names in the UK this year – so you may be more familiar with it by the time the next generation grows up. The name has many different meanings across the world; it means ‘ocean’ in Hawaii, and ‘rejoice’ in Scandinavian. The name rose to popularity in 2000 in the UK.
The family have now gone back to their mansion in Cheshire, where preparations have been made for the new arrival. They won’t be short for space in their £3.5 million home! Although the couple have refused to sell the rights for the first baby photos, young women such as Hackney Escorts are eager to see whether little Kai has his mum or his dad’s looks!
