Joe McElderry Wins The X Factor 2009

Millions of people across the UK have been tuning in over the last weeks to watch ITV’s singing competition ‘The X Factor’ whittle it’s contestants down to a final three. Last week, one of the favourites to win, Danyl Johnson, was voted off the show. He has described himself as ‘marmite’, due to the fact that you either love him or hate him. He had faced heavy criticism throughout the show for being too arrogant, but his good looks and soulful voice won him many admirers.

On Saturday night, the first part of the X Factor final was aired. Stacey Solomon, the single mum from Dagenham, was the last girl left in the competition and was up against jack the lad Olly Murs and 18 year old Joe McElderry. The running was very close, with each act bringing a very different style to the stage. Stacey was joined on stage by Michael Buble to sing a duet, whilst Olly paired up with Robbie Williams and Joe duetted with George Michael. Despite strong performances from all three, Stacey was voted out to leave the two boys going head to head on Sunday night.

Olly Murs had developed his own dancing style during the competition, and proved himself to be a real showman with lively performances and a versatile voice. Geordie boy Joe had the most consistently good voice throughout the contest, and won many hearts with his angelic and wholesome appearance. His mentor, Cheryl Cole, was always very forthcoming with her praise and was proud to have a fellow Geordie representing the North of England.

The final of the show saw the return of previous X Factor winners Leona Lewis and Alexandra Burke. Last year’s runners up JLS joined Alexandra on stage to sing a medley of their biggest hits. All three artists have had great success since leaving the show, unlike some of the show’s earlier winners.

Presenter Dermot O’Leary kept the viewers in suspense as he paused before reading out the results of this year’s competition. Over 2 million people had voted, and the Tyneside boy Joe came out top. He looked in shock as he was announced the winner and presented with a copy of his debut single, “The Climb”. The show broke ITV’s viewing records, peaking at almost 20 million viewers. Our Camberwell escorts tuned in to see the results. The X Factor has grown in popularity, and doesn’t look like it’s stopping any time soon.
